Volunteering in Yamhill County

Volunteering can offer people a sense of satisfaction they may not find in their professional lives. For some, it is an opportunity to give back. For others, it is a way to stay in touch with the realities of life. For steill others, it reminds them of how fortunate they are for whatever blessings they may have been given.

When I started putting together this article, my intention was to spotlight the work that council spouses are involved in. I heard back from two of them. Dean Rhodes, who's wife Patricia is the chair for the Salvation Army Community Garden. And, Nick Harris, who volunteers but preferred to keep it a private matter as it provides that reality check for him and his wife. I can respect that.

So, I decided to highlight the community garden and some of their needs. I also decided to put together a list of opportunities that have real needs and some ways that people can help in big and small ways. I have listed their contact information. So, feel free to step in, help out and offer someone a hand up. Sometimes it can just be a matter of learning to shop their stores first.

If you would like to spotlight your opportunity, please contact me at angela.flood@gmail.com

McMinnville Community Garden

McMinnville Community Garden is located at the Salvation Army on W 2nd in McMinnville Oregon, and is co-sponsored by the McMinnville Salvation Army and the Yamhill County OSU Master Gardeners.

The Community Garden provides a space for families to grow a row for themselves and others. It requires a commitment to your area and the general space. The cost is low but the benefit is high and the bounty in the general area goes to local food needs such as the food bank, St. Barnabas Kitchen and other local charities.
